My Melancholy Baby

Despite the fact that music usually doesn't get much interest on the blog, I'd like to post this as a kind of reference. The saxophonist, Lee Konitz, is a musician that I either have brought up or likely will bring up in conversation, since he is one of my favourites, and my teacher studied with him. When he plays the melody, he does so with so much feeling and conviction. When he improvises, he seems to think of the music note by note, and it feels very spontaneous. Some of my other favourite moments in this performance:

0:14 A great run on the bass.
Bill Evan's solo. He mostly plays the notes one at a time, without comping, which is unusual. I also love how minimal his accompaniment is when Lee Konitz improvises. I think he doesn't play anything for about a minute, and then adds very soft, quick touches.

Enjoy.

  1. I really enjoy your writing about music actually Zicheng, especially the one about the jazz great who'd just lost a friend, and private expression. In my case at least it's only that you've thought those pieces over so much that I tend to just absorb them and don't have much to add.

  2. Thank you Julia. I'm glad that you, and presumably others enjoy it, although I would love it if everyone would discuss the music more.
